ALAM Launches Pioneering Simulator Centre for Future-Ready Seafarer Training

The Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM) has inaugurated its Maritime Experiential Learning Centre, becoming the first MASTER (Maritime Advancement in Simulation Technology & R&D Services) Centre in the Asia Pacific region, endorsed by Wärtsilä. This centre features advanced cloud-enabled simulators that effectively replicate real-world vessel operations, aimed at enhancing maritime education and training.

The launch event was officiated by Arsenio Dominguez, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), during his first visit to Malaysia. The simulator hub is equipped with high-definition visuals, virtual reality capabilities, remote training options, and automated grading tools. These advanced features are tailored to equip a new generation of seafarers with essential skills in decarbonisation, digitalisation, and smart navigation—key areas of focus for the future of maritime operations.

This event coincided with Malaysia Maritime Week 2025, during which Dominguez also engaged with over 250 students in a session titled “Malaysia Maritime NextGen.” The session aimed to stimulate innovation and enhance the maritime education sector in Malaysia, emphasizing the importance of adapting to emerging trends and technologies in the industry.

Through this initiative, ALAM is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of maritime education and practices within the region, positioning Malaysia as a leader in maritime innovation and sustainability.
