Costas Kadis, the Commissioner for Oceans and Fisheries, is set to participate in the European Maritime Day, taking place on May 22 and 23, 2023, in Cork, Ireland. He will formally inaugurate the event alongside various dignitaries, including Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, Climate, Environment and Energy Minister Darragh O’Brien, and Cork’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Dan Boyle. The European Maritime Day, co-organised by the European Commission, serves as a platform for Europe’s maritime community to convene, exchange knowledge, tackle significant issues, and outline cooperative actions aimed at enhancing maritime affairs and fostering a sustainable blue economy.
This year’s focus will be on the forthcoming European Ocean Pact, a pivotal initiative designed to streamline coherence across all ocean-related policies within the EU. Commissioner Kadis will explore several key initiatives aimed at promoting a sustainable blue economy. These projects are vital for cultivating the skills and knowledge required in sustainable fishing and aquaculture sectors. Key locations on his visit include the National Maritime College of Ireland, the Lir National Ocean Test Facility, the MaREI (Research Ireland Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine), and the Good Fish Processing Facility.
In addition to these educational and research facilities, Kadis will engage with representatives from fisheries and aquaculture organizations, as well as environmental NGOs, to strengthen collaborative efforts in promoting sustainability practices. His visit also coincides with the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the European Fisheries Control Agency. During this celebration, Kadis will tour the agency’s patrol vessel, ‘Ocean Guardian,’ which will be docked in Cork as part of the festivities.
