On Thursday morning, a fire erupted aboard the MV Interasia Tenacity, a Singapore-flagged container ship, while navigating near Mumbai’s coast, headed for the Nhava Sheva port. The incident occurred around 8:40 AM, with the fire confined to a single container on the ship’s deck. Fortunately, the crew aboard the vessel swiftly managed to control the situation, eliminating the need for further assistance, as confirmed by the Indian Coast Guard.
The MV Interasia Tenacity, operated by Taiwan-based Interasia Line, has a capacity of 3,055 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) and was carrying 1,387 containers at the time of the fire. The ship had set sail from Port Klang, Malaysia, on June 8 and is expected to reach Nhava Sheva by late Friday night. There are 21 Filipino crew members onboard, all of whom are reported to be safe.
In response to the distress call received over marine radio, the Indian Coast Guard promptly deployed the offshore patrol vessel ICGS Sachet to provide firefighting support and dispatched an aircraft for aerial surveillance of the affected area. Currently, the MV Interasia Tenacity is under close monitoring by both the Coast Guard and the Indian Navy to ensure the safety of the crew and cargo as it continues its journey.
This incident underscores the importance of maritime safety protocols and the readiness of the Indian Coast Guard to respond to emergencies at sea.
