In the constantly evolving landscape of global supply chains, leaders in the maritime sector face critical challenges that require nuanced decision-making. A recent study, summarized in this article, highlights the importance of understanding diverse perspectives among maritime experts to navigate these complexities effectively.
The study, employing a unique methodology called Claros, sought to identify various schools of thought within the maritime community. Unlike traditional consensus-building methods, which often mask divergent opinions, Claros aimed to surface these differences through a structured consultation process involving maritime leaders. The findings reveal significant insights into the pressing issues confronting the industry.
One of the primary challenges noted is the difficulty in achieving consensus among stakeholders due to their varied interests, which can lead to conflicting views and misunderstandings. Power dynamics and cultural differences further complicate communication, necessitating an integrative approach to decision-making. This study employed the Delphi method followed by Claros, allowing participants to iteratively review and rank critical maritime issues.
The study identified 17 key issues affecting the industry, including environmental regulations, decarbonization, cybersecurity threats, supply chain disruptions, and crew welfare. Through factor analysis, the study distilled the responses into five distinct schools of thought, encapsulating 69% of the variance among the 21 participating experts.
