Cyprus Aims to Enhance EU Maritime Security Collaboration, Says Defence Minister

The Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU aims to enhance European collaboration on maritime security, safeguard critical maritime infrastructure, and implement the European Maritime Security Strategy. Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas emphasized the significance of these efforts during a media briefing at the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Larnaca.

Palmas highlighted the strategic upgrade of the Limassol Port and Mari Naval Base, which he views as essential to Cyprus’ defense infrastructure. He pointed out that this upgrade is part of a broader, long-term plan to bolster the National Guard’s operational capabilities and Cyprus’ contributions to EU and international partnerships.

During his remarks, Palmas acknowledged the complex security landscape faced by Europe, underscoring that security and defense are foundational for European unity and credibility. The Cyprus Presidency comes amid significant geopolitical shifts, requiring enhanced cooperation among EU member states to address concurrent challenges.

The upgrades at Mari Naval Base are strategically critical for logistical and operational support of European allies and provide Cyprus with a unique geographical advantage. As the easternmost EU member, Cyprus serves as a nexus between Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, facilitating humanitarian missions and crisis responses.

Palmas stressed that securing adequate European funding is vital for Cyprus to effectively contribute to EU objectives in military mobility and crisis management. He emphasized the importance of a well-coordinated European transport network, which is essential for the swift movement of military resources.

Underlining maritime security’s importance, he announced that Cyprus will focus on fostering European cooperation to protect maritime infrastructure and implement relevant strategies in partnership with EU states and institutions. He affirmed that Cyprus’ defense initiatives are rooted in cooperation and are not directed against other nations, aiming instead to promote regional stability and security.

The Defence Minister concluded by expressing Cyprus’ readiness to responsibly lead within the EU, aiming for a safer, more resilient, and united Europe. According to him, the forthcoming efforts are not just about military readiness but are integrally connected to peace and prosperity in society.
