The Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) recently convened a meeting with representatives from the Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) to address various persistent issues affecting Indian seafarers and their families. The discussion highlighted several critical grievances that necessitated attention for the welfare of seafarers.
Primarily, the FSUI raised concerns regarding the compensation for families of deceased seafarers. Issues related to the non-payment of wages, gratuity, and other statutory dues were also focal points. Additionally, the meeting spotlighted the plight of missing seafarers and the significant support mechanisms needed for the families impacted by such unfortunate situations.
Another significant topic of discussion was the compliance with tribunal awards and contractual obligations, which are essential for maintaining the integrity of employment agreements within the maritime sector. The participants also addressed the opening of Articles of Agreement specifically for catering crew, alongside other concerns relating to RPSL compliance and the practices associated with overseas recruitment.
In response to these discussions, the Directorate General of Shipping reaffirmed its commitment to uphold the rights and welfare of Indian seafarers. The DG Shipping representatives promised to formally document all the concerns raised during the meeting and assured that these issues would be analyzed in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, aiming for timely and appropriate action in alignment with existing rules and regulations.
