DHL launches first EV logistics hub in Indonesia

DHL Global Forwarding launched the Batam EV Center of Excellence. This first-of-its-kind logistics hub in Asia, located in Batam, Indonesia, aims to bridge the gap in the region’s evolving electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, catering specifically to the growing EV industry.

The Batam EV Center of Excellence offers customers a comprehensive and modular range of services including inbound and outbound logistics across various transportation modes, warehousing with value-added services such as battery check and charge, and full aftermarket battery handling. This handling encompasses storage, recharging, and dealer services for warranty issues, battery replacement, and removal. The facility also features temperature and humidity-controlled rooms, and a one-stop solution with chambers for both general and dangerous goods.

Batam’s close proximity to Asia Pacific’s manufacturing and trade activities positions it as an emerging international hub, making it the ideal location for the new EV Center of Excellence. Customers can enjoy seamless connectivity to global markets without compromising on lead times, complemented by Batam’s Free Trade Zone and Special Economic Zone status, which maximizes efficiency.

“Indonesia, with its abundant natural resources of nickel and cobalt, is at the forefront of developing an integrated EV supply chain. With the government’s goal of positioning the country among the top three global EV battery producers by 2027, the establishment of Batam EV Center of Excellence marks a significant milestone in supporting the objective, further bolstering the local EV industry,” said Vincent Yong, President Director of DHL Global Forwarding Indonesia.

“DHL has proven expertise in handling EV logistics to the highest standards. We offer flexible and adaptable services, enabling our customers to integrate our solutions into their current supply chain processes seamlessly. Our team of EV experts is also ready to provide customers with tailored solutions that meet their unique requirements.”

The EV Center of Excellence is part of the region’s first-ever EV and battery logistics hub, built by DHL Global Forwarding and developed in close cooperation with Team EV of DHL Customer Solutions and Innovation (CSI). The pioneering EV logistics hub is a multi-user facility that includes provisions for tailored expansion to accommodate specific requirements. The facility not only complies with safety and security standards for optimal handling of EV batteries, but also holds ISO 9001, 14001, and 22301 certifications.

Fathi Tlatli, President Global Sector Auto-Mobility at DHL CSI, added: “We are committed to empowering our customers with seamless connectivity and unparalleled service excellence with our newest EV Center of Excellence. As part of our global network with centers in Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East, and with further expansion underway, customers not only gain access to their local market but also to international growth opportunities.”

In addition to the launch of its Batam EV Center of Excellence, DHL Global Forwarding Indonesia is introducing its new electric van, which covers pick-up and delivery within Greater Jakarta and Karawang area. This deployment of EV for last-mile delivery further underscores DHL’s commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, while helping customers to expand their green footprint.

The electric van is equipped with rapid charging capabilities, allowing for a recharge in just over an hour. Capable of traveling up to 300 kilometers on a full charge, the electric van offers a reliable and environmentally friendly transportation solution.
