DLA Land and Maritime and DLA Aviation Discuss Strategic Collaboration During Counterpart Visit

Cathy Contreras, the Acquisition Executive for DLA Aviation, recently met with senior leadership from DLA Land and Maritime, including Army Brig. Gen. Gail Atkins, to discuss the challenges and opportunities within their respective supply chains. Both organizations play crucial roles in the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), which manages the global defense supply chain for military services and other agencies.

DLA Aviation, located in Richmond, Virginia, is responsible for aviation-related supplies, including weapon systems and flight safety equipment. In contrast, DLA Land and Maritime, based in Columbus, Ohio, manages ground and maritime supply chains and consumable hardware. These two entities often collaborate, particularly in supporting repair parts for overlapping military systems.

Atkins, an Army aviator herself, welcomed the DLA Aviation team by expressing her appreciation for their vital role as customers. The meeting’s agenda included discussions on DLA Land and Maritime’s organizational structure, demand portfolio, and logistics strategies, including performance-based logistics and CAGE compromise efforts. A significant focus was placed on lessons learned from the recent industrial hardware supply chain transfer, which resulted in both teams managing roughly 900,000 items.

A pivotal part of the meeting involved exploring the similarities and differences in the organizational structures of the two commands, crucial as DLA looks ahead to future transformations. Chris Davis, director of DLA Aviation’s Strategic Acquisition Programs, emphasized the importance of alignment in their structures to promote effective and efficient operations.

Another critical topic was workforce development and the need to attract talent in a competitive job market. Contreras highlighted a training gap identified in recent interns, prompting DLA Aviation to implement centralized on-the-job training. Both teams recognized the need to sustain a skilled workforce, especially as retirements post-pandemic increase.

The session concluded with calls for ongoing dialogue and open communication between the two organizations, reinforcing the importance of collaboration for operational readiness. Atkins encouraged participants to preserve the connections formed during the visit and to continue sharing insights, noting that maintaining these conversations is essential for both organizational success and enhancing customer service.
