On March 21, 2014, DNV GL, a prominent classification society, inaugurated its new office in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in a ceremony attended by distinguished guests including His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon of Norway and Dr. Henrik Madsen, the Group President & CEO of DNV GL. This event was part of a broader Norwegian trade delegation visiting Vietnam, highlighting the growing economic ties between the two nations. Also in attendance was Norwegian Minister of Trade and Fisheries, Ms. Monica Mæland, along with other dignitaries.
DNV GL has maintained a presence in Vietnam since 1995, beginning as a Representative Office. The recent move aims to consolidate its three core business areas—Maritime, Oil & Gas, and Business Assurance—into a single operational hub. This open-concept office is designed to enhance collaboration and efficiency among employees from both DNV and GL, following their merger in September 2013.
Vietnam has been recognized as an emerging market with significant opportunities for DNV GL, particularly in the maritime and oil & gas sectors. Already, the company has established a notable footprint in the shipbuilding industry, represented across major shipyards throughout the country. Dr. Madsen emphasized the remarkable expansion of Vietnam’s oil and gas sector in recent years and expressed confidence that this trend would continue, thereby increasing the demand for local expertise. Currently, DNV GL employs around 60 staff members in Vung Tau and Ho Chi Minh City, predominantly Vietnamese nationals, and intends to enhance the development of local talent in the industry.
This strategic move by DNV GL not only signifies their commitment to the Vietnamese market but also illustrates the mutual interest in bolstering economic cooperation between Norway and Vietnam. The development of local expertise is seen as pivotal for sustaining the growth trajectory of the regions’ oil and gas industries, which are expected to flourish in the future. Overall, the new office represents a significant milestone in DNV GL’s commitment to contributing to Vietnam’s development while fostering a strong local workforce.
