Ethics, transparency get recognition

The answer to corruption is to develop a strong culture of ethical business practices and transparency.

The Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) gets the SAFETY4SEA Sustainability Award, sponsored by UMAR, for working towards the vision of a maritime industry free of corruption that enables fair trade, creating a culture of integrity within the maritime community.
Presenting the award Thrasos Tsangarides, Group CEO, UMAR, said: the MACN understands that economic and technological growth often come at a cost. And corruption often tests ethical business practices.  It is a major problem that costs trillions in bribes every year.
He said that corruption distorts competition, deters free market and delays further development of social and economic growth.
According to him, the answer lies in developing corporate cultures with strong business values.  These values must include ethical behaviour and transparency, which actually add competitive advantages.  Additionally, it also enables more trustworthy business relationships and lower costs.
Accepting the award on behalf of MACN, Dimitris Balamatsias, DPA & HSQE Manager, Neptune Lines, stated corruption is a real threat to the people who work on ships.  Certainly, it damages business and reputation.  However, shipping is not alone in facing this enormous problem.  People often excused corruption as too hard to solve.  Or it is brushed off as the way things have always been done.
He added that with shipping companies working together, it is more effective in fighting corruption.  This is relatively better than any regulation or press expose.
The organiser announced the winners on 2 October 2018 at the Yacht Club of Greece.
The awards focus exclusively on initiatives and individuals who foster Safety Excellence & Sustainable Shipping, following a combination of open nomination and audience-vote.
