By the morning of July 3, the national search and rescue agency confirmed the recovery of 31 survivors, while four bodies had been retrieved. As rescue efforts continued, officials noted that bad weather was a contributing factor to the incident. The head of Surabaya’s search and rescue agency, Nanang Sigit, mentioned that initial rescue attempts were hindered by high waves and strong winds, but conditions later improved.
President Prabowo Subianto, currently away on a trip to Saudi Arabia, directed an immediate emergency response, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. A rescue team of over 54 personnel, including navy and police, was dispatched with inflatable rescue boats, and a larger vessel was sent from Surabaya to aid the ongoing search operation.
The ferry’s manifest listed 53 passengers and 12 crew members, but discrepancies between actual passenger numbers and those on the manifest are common in Indonesia due to lax safety regulations. The ferry was reportedly also transporting 22 vehicles, including lorries, heightening concerns about the incident’s scale and complexity.
Witness accounts and preliminary assessments indicated that many of the passengers were Indonesian. One survivor tragically recounted the loss of his father in the disaster. As rescue efforts proceeded, authorities expressed a commitment to expanding the search area to locate any remaining missing individuals.
Indonesia, with its vast archipelago of approximately 17,000 islands, faces frequent maritime accidents, often attributed to inadequate safety measures and adverse weather conditions.
