Five Seafarers Missing After Barge Capsizes Near Singapore

On Thursday morning, the Singapore Police Coast Guard (PCG) successfully rescued six seafarers from a life raft after their Bolivia-flagged barge capsized approximately three nautical miles west of Horsburgh Lighthouse within Singaporean waters. The rescue was part of a broader operation aimed at locating the remaining five crew members, all Chinese nationals, who were still unaccounted for as of 5 PM local time on Friday, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

The search and rescue efforts have been extensive, deploying significant resources to locate the missing individuals. The operation has included two Super Puma helicopters from the Republic of Singapore Air Force, two patrol vessels from the Republic of Singapore Navy, and two PCG patrol craft. Additionally, divers and a diving support vessel from Resolve Salvage & Fire (Asia) have been involved, as well as assistance from approximately 60 passing commercial vessels.

The six crew members who were successfully rescued were reported to be in good health and did not require any medical attention. Despite the successful rescue of these individuals, the ongoing search for the five missing crew members continues, highlighting the urgency and the challenges posed by the maritime incident. The situation remains critical, with authorities working diligently to locate the remaining crew members amidst the complexities of search operations in open waters.
