On Monday at approximately 12:30 PM Singapore time, a fire and explosion occurred aboard the Singapore-flagged containership Wan Hai 503, which is operated by Wan Hai Lines. The vessel, carrying 22 crew members, was situated about 80 kilometers southwest of Azhikkal, Kerala, India, when the incident took place. Sadly, four crew members are currently reported missing.
Rescue operations were promptly initiated, resulting in the successful recovery of 18 crew members from lifeboats by a nearby vessel. However, reports indicate that some of these crew members sustained injuries during the incident. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has confirmed that search and rescue efforts are ongoing, with assistance from the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy.
Dramatic footage released by the Indian Coast Guard showed heavy smoke emanating from the ship, alongside significant damage to several containers on board. According to Indian officials, at least 40 containers were lost overboard due to the explosions and subsequent fires. Efforts are currently underway to ascertain the cause of the incident and to locate the missing crew members, who include a Taiwanese national, two Indonesians, and one individual from Myanmar.
The Wan Hai 503, which was built in 2005, was en route to Nhava Sheva in Mumbai after departing from the Sri Lankan port of Colombo. As of the latest updates from the Indian Coast Guard, the fires and explosions had not been fully extinguished, particularly around the midsection and container bay of the ship. The forward-bay fire has been brought under control, but dense smoke continues to pose a challenge. Furthermore, the vessel is reportedly listing between 10 to 15 degrees to port, with additional containers having been reported lost overboard.
The situation remains fluid, with authorities continuing their investigations while prioritizing the safety of those involved in the rescue operations and the crew members who remain unaccounted for.
