On January 8, 2025, New Delhi hosted the inaugural security dialogue between India and Malaysia, aiming to bolster cooperation in several key areas—counter-terrorism, de-radicalisation, cyber security, defense industry collaboration, and maritime security. The dialogue was co-chaired by India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Raja Dato Nushirwan Bin Zainal Abidin, Director General of Malaysia’s National Security Council.
This meeting allowed both nations to discuss the current global and regional security landscape, as well as review ongoing bilateral initiatives in the fields of security and defense. A notable aspect of the dialogue was the exploration of enhanced cooperation concerning critical minerals and rare earth elements, which are increasingly vital for technological and industrial applications.
The move to institutionalize this dialogue by scheduling annual meetings indicates a commitment to strengthen these partnerships and address mutual security concerns systematically. This initiative follows a significant diplomatic engagement in August 2024, when Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim visited India at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During this visit, the two leaders elevated the India-Malaysia relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, emphasizing the importance of security cooperation.
