As geopolitical tensions escalate in West Asia, India is proactively enhancing its maritime security measures to protect its seafarers, safeguard vessels, and ensure the uninterrupted flow of global trade. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has spearheaded efforts to bolster monitoring and preparedness within the shipping and port sectors, underscoring the region’s critical role in global energy and cargo transportation.
An inter-ministerial meeting convened by the ministry involved key government representatives from bodies such as the Ministry of External Affairs and the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, along with industry stakeholders. This meeting was a response to assessing the evolving maritime landscape, particularly after statements from Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, emphasizing the government’s vigilance regarding developments in the Middle East and nearby maritime routes.
Central to India’s response is a robust monitoring system initiated to safeguard Indian vessels and seafarers in vulnerable maritime areas. A 24-hour helpline has been established by the Directorate General of Shipping to offer real-time assistance. Indian-flagged vessels are now directed to adopt enhanced security protocols and are required to register with Indian diplomatic missions in the region. This registration, along with the submission of updated crew information, is vital for effective response mechanisms should the security situation worsen.
Despite the rising tensions, Indian officials report that vessels operating in the area, including 35 in the Persian Gulf and three in the Gulf of Aden, have remained secure. These ships are monitored through India’s Long-Range Identification and Tracking National Data Centre, with updates provided on an hourly basis. Notably, no incidents involving Indian vessels have been reported thus far.
Additionally, shipping companies and recruitment agencies have been advised to conduct voyage-specific risk assessments and maintain communication with their crews and families. Dedicated channels for coordination have been activated to facilitate rapid assistance if needed.
The continuity of global trade is also a significant focus for the Indian government. Major ports have been instructed to support exporters and logistics operators, minimizing any disruptions to import-export activities. Authorities are closely monitoring maritime traffic, expanding storage facilities where needed, and prioritizing the handling of perishable goods.
