Indian coast guard battles massive fire on container ship listing off Kerala

Indian Coast Guard Responds to Major Fire on Listing Container Ship off Kerala

A significant maritime incident is unfolding off the coast of Kerala, India, where the Indian Coast Guard is battling a large fire on the Singaporean-flagged container ship, MV Wan Hai 503. The situation has escalated, with the vessel tilting at an alarming angle of 10 to 15 degrees and ongoing explosions reported more than 24 hours after the Coast Guard responded to a distress call.

The fire erupted around 9:30 a.m. local time on Monday, reportedly following an explosion, although the cause of the blast remains unknown. While 18 sailors were successfully rescued with minor injuries, four crew members are still unaccounted for. The ship had departed from Colombo, Sri Lanka, on June 7, and was en route to Mumbai.

Coast Guard Commandant Amit Uniyal stated that their efforts to control the blaze are intensifying, but the situation appears to be deteriorating, with more containers catching fire. As of Tuesday, five Coast Guard vessels were engaged in firefighting operations, and ongoing explosions were reported from various sections of the ship. Visuals shared by the Coast Guard depict flames and dense clouds of black smoke, raising concerns over environmental impacts, although the current scale of damage has yet to be determined.

This incident marks the second serious maritime event off Kerala in less than a month. On May 25, the Liberian-flagged MSC ELSA 3 sank, losing over 600 containers, including 13 with hazardous materials. The Kerala government declared an environmental emergency and advised fishermen to avoid the area. Fortunately, an assessment by India’s Director General of Shipping indicated that none of the containers washed ashore contained hazardous materials, and efforts were underway to remove them from the coastline. Additionally, an underwater operation is in progress to cap the sunken ship’s fuel tanks to prevent further environmental degradation.

The MV Wan Hai 503 is managed by Wan Hai Lines (Singapore) Pte Ltd, and an investigation by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore is anticipated. As authorities continue their firefighting efforts and search for the missing crew members, the overarching concern remains for both human safety and potential environmental consequences stemming from this incident on the high seas.
