The Indian Navy recently demonstrated its prompt response capabilities by addressing a distress signal from the Palau-flagged tanker MT Yi Cheng 6, which experienced a significant fire in its engine room while sailing from Kandla, Gujarat, to Shinas, Oman. The vessel, carrying 14 crew members of Indian origin, encountered a total power failure at sea, which heightened the urgency of the situation.
In response, the Indian Navy dispatched the stealth frigate INS Tabar, which was already operational in the Gulf of Oman, to conduct a critical rescue operation. A firefighting team composed of 13 Indian naval personnel was deployed, aided by the ship’s boats and helicopters, to assist in combating the blaze. Five crew members from the tanker also participated in the firefighting efforts. Despite the initial intensity of the flames, the coordinated action between the Indian Navy and the tanker’s crew successfully led to significant control over the fire.
The Indian Navy continues to monitor the situation closely, reaffirming its dedication to maritime security and humanitarian assistance in international waters. This incident serves as a testament to the Navy’s preparedness and its essential role in protecting Indian lives beyond national borders, emphasizing the importance of swift, efficient action in emergencies at sea.
