In a troubling series of maritime incidents involving young sailors from India, two significant cases have emerged. The first involves 21-year-old Yash Avinash Deore from Maharashtra, who went missing from the merchant ship MT Athina I while it was en route from Oman to India. Yash had joined the merchant navy as an Ordinary Seaman (OS) in June 2024. His family was alerted about his disappearance by the shipping company on January 30, prompting immediate concern from his father, who reached out to their elder son, Nayan Deore. Nayan sought information in Thane but was dissatisfied with the updates provided, leading him to contact the Directorate General of Shipping in Mumbai for a more thorough investigation.
On February 2, Nayan filed a request at the Naupada police station in Thane for assistance in finding his brother. However, due to the incident occurring in international waters, the police could not register a missing person case and advised the shipping company to keep the family informed.
In a separate incident, 23-year-old Sunil Pachar from Rajasthan was reported missing after his colleagues could not locate him on the ship where he temporarily worked since November 2024. His absence was noted after he had gone to sleep on the deck. A body was later discovered floating in the Arabian Sea near Sassoon Dock, identified as Sunil. Initial investigations suggest drowning, but a definitive cause of death will be established following an autopsy. The local police have registered an Accidental Death Report and are conducting an ongoing investigation.
These incidents raise serious concerns regarding the safety of crew members aboard merchant ships. Families of both individuals are urgently seeking clarity about the circumstances surrounding their loved ones’ situations. This string of events has highlighted the need for better safety measures and transparency in maritime operations, as families navigate their distress amidst ongoing investigations.
