On June 9, a Singapore-flagged container ship, the MV Wan Hai 503, caught fire about 78 nautical miles off the southern coast of India, specifically near Beypore Port. The vessel measures 268 meters in length and was carrying 22 crew members at the time of the incident. The fire is believed to have ignited as the ship started listing, prompting urgent response efforts from the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy.
By June 10, 18 crew members had been successfully rescued and taken to New Mangalore Port in Karnataka, where they received medical assistance. Six of the rescued crew sustained injuries, and while three have since been discharged from medical care, the search continues for the remaining four crew members who are still unaccounted for.
In response to the unfolding crisis, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has been collaborating with the vessel’s classification society and Indian authorities. They are providing technical support to maneuver through the situation effectively, which includes assessing the fire onboard and managing the stability of the ship. The authority stated their commitment to monitoring the situation closely, emphasizing assessments regarding the vessel’s structural integrity and potential environmental impacts, and they pledged to supply updates as more information becomes available.
As of June 10, reports indicated that “fires and explosions persist” onboard the MV Wan Hai 503, with the ship leaning at an angle of approximately 10 to 15 degrees. Dramatic images from the scene showed flames erupting from stacked containers and thick plumes of black smoke enveloping the area. Some containers were dislodged by an apparent explosion and ended up in the water, further complicating firefighting efforts.
The Indian Coast Guard deployed multiple vessels to the area, actively working to extinguish the flames using jets of water aimed at the burning ship. Two additional firefighting vessels, called upon by Indian authorities and the ship’s owner, were expected to reach the scene later in the day to bolster the response efforts.
This incident with the MV Wan Hai 503 is not an isolated case; it follows another maritime accident involving a Liberian-flagged vessel carrying hazardous cargo that sank off the coast of Kerala on May 24. Fortunately, all 24 crew members from that incident were rescued by the Indian Navy.
As the situation aboard the MV Wan Hai 503 continues to develop, authorities remain focused on ensuring the safety of the remaining crew and mitigating any environmental impact stemming from the blaze.
