Rescue personnel have retrieved the body of Fernando Martin Carreras, a Spanish man who had been missing for over a week following a tragic boat sinking in the waters off Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The discovery was made near Rinca Island, approximately 2 kilometers from where the vessel sank on December 26. Fathur Rahman, the head of the local search and rescue agency, confirmed Carreras’s identity after a formal identification process.
Carreras, 44, was the coach of the reserve women’s team for Valencia, a significant detail communicated by Real Madrid. During the incident, his wife and one of their daughters were among the seven individuals who managed to survive the ordeal, while the body of another daughter was found a few days prior. Unfortunately, two children from the same family remain unaccounted for, prompting ongoing search efforts that include the use of divers and sonar systems.
In response to the sinking, local police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, indicating that legal consequences may be pursued if evidence of negligence is established. Indonesia has a long history of maritime accidents, largely attributed to inadequate safety measures and adverse weather conditions.
