NYK First: Indonesian Seafarer Appointed as Captain of LNG Carrier

Indonesian Seafarer Becomes Captain of LNG Carrier at NYK

NYK Shipmanagement Pte. Ltd. has made a significant announcement by appointing Asep Dadang Kurniawan as the first Indonesian captain of an NYK LNG carrier. With a career spanning over two decades at NYK, Kurniawan has built a wealth of experience in the maritime industry, initially serving on container ships and chemical tankers before transitioning to LNG carriers in 2008. His current role involves overseeing transportation services for the Tangguh LNG project in Indonesia.

Since the start of shipping operations for the Tangguh LNG project in 2008, NYK has aimed to nurture high-quality Indonesian seafarers, particularly as domestic transportation began in earnest in 2014. The company has implemented a long-term training plan through the NYK Maritime College, which standardizes training requirements for seafarers irrespective of nationality. This initiative has been instrumental in promoting Indonesian professionals to senior positions on high-risk vessels, with Kurniawan’s promotion serving as a tangible result of these efforts.

In his response to the appointment, Captain Kurniawan expressed gratitude towards NYK for the trust placed in him. He acknowledged the responsibilities that come with being a master on an LNG ship and committed to ensuring safe operations. He also hopes that this opportunity will pave the way for other Indonesian officers to advance in their careers.

In addition to promoting local talent, NYK has outlined its commitment to integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into its management strategies. On February 3, the company released its NYK Group ESG Story, which emphasizes the importance of aligning business activities with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As part of this commitment, NYK aims to continue training top-tier Indonesian seafarers and creating job opportunities while fostering sustainable solutions within the maritime industry.

Overall, the appointment of Captain Asep Dadang Kurniawan marks a milestone in the representation of Indonesian talent in maritime leadership and aligns with NYK’s broader goals for sustainability and local development. The company’s ongoing efforts to enhance maritime education and training are vital for the future of Indonesia’s LNG transportation sector and the maritime industry as a whole.
