IPB University Experts Propose Generative AI and Blockchain Innovations for Agromaritime Logistics Challenges

The logistics process in Indonesia, particularly regarding the agromaritime industry, faces significant challenges, including inefficiency and a lack of traceability in logistics data. Experts from IPB University emphasized the potential of emerging technologies like Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and innovative blockchain to address these issues during a recent webinar titled “Generative AI and Innovative Blockchain for the Development of the National Agromaritime Industry.”

Dr. Taryono, Chairman of the Fisheries and Maritime Specialization at IPB University, highlighted that the challenges extend beyond commodity management to include logistical support activities necessary for enhancing national economic efficiency. In his discussion, he underlined that logistics solutions encompass all activities that facilitate the logistical process.

Prof. Ernan Rustiadi, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation at IPB University, noted that Generative AI can significantly benefit resource management, weather forecasting, and the creation of superior products and services. He stated that innovative blockchain offers a transformative approach to data security and transparency.

Prof. Yandra Arkeman, an expert in AI and blockchain at IPB University, elaborated on the advantages of these technologies for the agromaritime sector, asserting that their implementation could improve both competitiveness and operational efficiency. He mentioned that the agromaritime industry connects upstream production with downstream consumption across various islands, reinforcing the need for innovative logistical solutions.

Generative AI can be applied in high-precision supply chain management (SCM) systems, weather prediction tools, and smart cold chain logistics. Blockchain technology can facilitate transparent supply chain systems and delivery order processes, enhancing traceability and accountability throughout the logistics chain. Prof. Yandra expressed optimism that future challenges in the agromaritime sector would center around value addition rather than merely logistical hurdles.

To achieve the vision of Agromaritime 5.0, Prof. Yandra outlined strategies focused on optimizing logistics systems and supply chains for agricultural and maritime products. By lowering logistics costs, farmers and fishermen could directly engage with industries, supported by blockchain technology to ensure transparency and traceability.

He also pointed out the need for industries that go beyond basic manufacturing to include downstream sectors producing value-added products, which would be backed by international-standard laboratories and AI technologies. Furthermore, the establishment of a smart e-commerce infrastructure would enhance product marketing, enabling global reach and better alignment with consumer preferences through predictive AI analytics.

This initiative is supported by the Advanced Digital Technology Consortium involving IPB University, the University of Indonesia, and the Bandung Institute of Technology, demonstrating a collaborative effort to modernize Indonesia’s agromaritime logistics framework effectively. The event featured key figures from various institutions, further emphasizing the collective endeavor to leverage advanced technologies for national development in the agromaritime industry.
