On February 11, 2025, Ireland’s Ambassador to Bangladesh and India, Kevin Kelly, met with Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus to discuss their mutual interests, focusing on various aspects of Bangladesh-Ireland relations. The meeting took place at the Jamuna state guest house and served as a platform to explore opportunities for growth between the two nations.

One significant area of discussion was cooperation in the education sector, which both sides acknowledged as crucial for fostering stronger ties. Additionally, the conversation included topics concerning the Rohingya community, emphasizing the need for humanitarian support and strategies for their integration and welfare. The representatives also reviewed the presence of Primark, a major retailer, in Bangladesh, indicating the potential for economic collaboration and employment generation.

Lamiya Morshed, the Senior Secretary and Principal Coordinator on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Affairs, was among those present at the meeting, demonstrating the involvement of various government levels in these talks. Ambassador Kelly’s agenda also included discussions with Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This meeting addressed broader topics such as trade and development cooperation, the GSP+ trade status, the interim government’s reform initiatives, and the ongoing Rohingya crisis. Importantly, the discussions touched on visa policies for Bangladeshi students, highlighting Ireland’s intention to promote educational exchanges.

Furthermore, the Ambassador held discussions with Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam, focusing on communication and cultural engagements that could further enrich bilateral relations. The Honorary Consul of Ireland in Bangladesh, Masud Khan, accompanied Kelly in these meetings, facilitating diplomatic interactions.

The meetings indicate a concerted effort by both Bangladesh and Ireland to strengthen their partnership across various sectors, including education, trade, and humanitarian aid, particularly concerning the Rohingya crisis. This dialogue illustrates the importance of international collaboration in addressing shared challenges while also exploring economic opportunities, thus laying the groundwork for a more robust and mutually beneficial relationship moving forward.
