External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently engaged in a series of bilateral discussions with several international counterparts while attending multiple conferences in Bangkok, Thailand. His visits align with key regional forums, including the ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting, the 9th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, and the ASEAN Regional Forum, among others.
During his time in Thailand, Jaishankar had a comprehensive discussion with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, setting the stage for his upcoming trip to China. This visit aims to finalize preparations for President Xi Jinping’s impending visit to India for a second informal summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Furthermore, Jaishankar met with British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, enhancing bilateral ties and discussing a range of pertinent global issues. In his interaction with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono, Jaishankar carried forward conversations from the recent G20 meeting in Osaka, addressing mutual interests and strengthening relations.
A significant focus of Jaishankar’s discussions was the Indo-Pacific region. His meeting with New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters was particularly noteworthy, as they explored shared interests and agreed to elevate both economic and political collaborations. Jaishankar remarked on their cordial exchanges and the strategic importance of their partnership.
In addition to these meetings, he connected with Federica Mogherini, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, where they discussed efforts to deepen India-EU relations. Jaishankar also began his day with a productive meeting with Thailand’s Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai, discussing the enhancement of maritime partnerships, BIMSTEC cooperation, and initiatives under ACMECS.
His discussions further extended to Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and the Philippines’ Teodoro Locsin Jr., focusing on reinforcing regional ties and cooperation on mutual interests. Each of these interactions underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its presence and partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region, while securing its position as a key player in regional dialogue and cooperation.
