Maritime Transport has announced an expansion of its partnership with GB Railfreight (GBRf) by introducing two new intermodal rail services connecting the DP World London Gateway to inland terminals at Hams Hall and iPort Doncaster. Starting last week and operating from Monday to Saturday, these services are a response to the increased cargo volumes being managed at London Gateway. This development coincides with a significant GBP 1 billion expansion project, which is set to commence this month, aimed at enhancing the facility’s capacity.
These new rail routes highlight Maritime’s ongoing commitment to investing in its rail network and infrastructure, which is designed to improve inland connectivity across vital corridors in the UK. Julie Garn, Intermodal Director at GB Railfreight, emphasized the critical role of rail in national supply chains, noting that moving goods by rail not only supports economic growth but also contributes to reduced emissions. By introducing more efficient and environmentally friendly transport options, these services exemplify the benefits of long-term collaboration in achieving lower-carbon logistical alternatives.
John Bailey, Managing Director of Intermodal at Maritime Transport, added that the growing container volumes at London Gateway are bolstered by its integration into the Gemini Cooperation’s Asia–Europe network, alongside the ongoing expansion project. The newly launched services are positioned to provide the additional capacity needed to support this growth, enhancing the national rail network and facilitating a meaningful shift from road to rail transport. This shift is part of a broader strategy to promote a more sustainable and efficient supply chain within the UK.
