The Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) convened its monthly members’ meeting this week to observe World Maritime Day on September 26, with a key presentation by Cecilia Müller Torbrand, CEO of the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN). This year’s World Maritime Day is themed “Navigating the Future: Safety First,” emphasizing the collective efforts of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the maritime industry to enhance maritime safety and protect the marine environment.
The meeting focused on the critical need to tackle corruption within the maritime sector, prompting discussions on whether the industry is making substantive progress in this area. The CSC reiterated the importance of keeping the IMO’s regulatory framework aligned with technological innovations to effectively address current and emerging safety challenges. Specific concerns highlighted included the safety implications of new technologies, the adoption of alternative fuels, and initiatives aimed at significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships. These advancements are paramount to maintaining the global shipping industry, which is responsible for facilitating 90% of world trade through maritime routes.
Additionally, the theme underscores the CSC’s commitment to enhancing Cyprus’s status as a prominent hub in the global shipping network, encapsulated in its mission to “Navigate Cyprus Globally.” The chamber emphasized the necessity of providing adequate support to the Cypriot maritime sector to sustain and grow its influence in international shipping.
During her presentation, Torbrand outlined both the hurdles and milestones in the ongoing battle against corruption in the maritime industry. She highlighted various initiatives and actions being taken to combat unethical practices that undermine fair competition and safety.
In celebration of World Maritime Day, the CSC also took part in a beach clean-up initiative organized by the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association (CYMEPA) in Limassol. This activity reflects the maritime community’s commitment to environmental stewardship and enhances awareness about marine conservation efforts. Overall, the meeting served as a vital platform for discussing significant maritime issues while reinforcing the shared responsibility of stakeholders to foster a safer, more sustainable maritime environment.
