Notable nations, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the USA, alongside the EU’s High Representative, collectively condemned China’s dangerous maneuvers, including the use of water cannons against Philippine vessels. Their statement reflected broader concerns about China’s military expansion and calls for strategic discussions to promote stability and transparency in the region.
The G7 reaffirmed its commitment to an Indo-Pacific that is characterized by respect for sovereignty and peaceful dispute resolution. They labeled China’s actions as “illicit, provocative, coercive, and dangerous.” Although this international support is encouraging, China has intensified its aggressive strategies, posing significant challenges for the Philippines as it navigates domestic issues like political rivalries and economic hardships.
In response to the geopolitical climate, local initiatives have emerged. During Women’s Month, Stratbase, in cooperation with the Australian Embassy, hosted a forum aimed at fostering collaboration among likeminded nations. Key discussions included environmental sustainability in the West Philippine Sea, led by Secretary Antonia Yulo Loyzaga of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Her agency’s efforts focus on climate action, marine biodiversity conservation, and safeguarding ocean ecosystems beyond national jurisdiction.
The DENR has initiated projects such as the establishment of marine scientific stations, notably on Pag-asa Island, and other conservation efforts in the West Philippine Sea. Upcoming initiatives are planned for the Recto Bank and Rizal Reef as the DENR continues to prioritize maritime security and natural resource sustainability.
Civil society is also playing an active role in maritime defense, with groups like the Atin Ito Coalition planning their third civilian mission in the West Philippine Sea and organizing events to raise awareness and solidarity.
Public sentiment shows significant support for strengthening international alliances. A Stratbase-commissioned survey indicated that a striking 77% of Filipinos advocate for increased joint military exercises to affirm the country’s territorial rights. Additionally, with the elections approaching on May 12, 78% would favor a candidate who commits to asserting the Philippines’ rights against Chinese aggression.
The situation underscores that safeguarding the West Philippine Sea is a national priority, permeating all levels of society, rather than being solely a military or diplomatic concern. The escalating tensions with China have become a critical component of national identity for Filipinos, emphasizing the need for collective action and support from global allies.
