Maritime, a logistics firm based in Felixstowe, reported significant financial challenges in its latest annual results for the year ending December 27, 2023. Revenue fell by £78 million to £404 million, down from £482 million in 2022, while pre-tax profits plummeted to £20.7 million from £40.1 million the previous year. The decline in profitability has been attributed by Maritime’s directors to the return to normalized trading conditions following the pandemic, along with ongoing supply chain issues that have persisted in recent years.
Despite these financial setbacks, the directors expressed satisfaction with the company’s overall performance. They emphasized that Maritime maintains a robust cash position, which positions the firm for potential growth and investment opportunities going forward. Notably, equity on the balance sheet has increased from £110 million to £126 million, indicating financial stability.
Key developments in the past year include enhancements to Maritime’s intermodal capabilities and expansions of its terminals located in Liverpool, Northampton, and East Midlands Freeport. The company also carried out a £30 million investment in its fleet renewal program. In a forward-looking initiative, Maritime is participating in the government-funded Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) program. This project aims to integrate electric and hydrogen fuel cell trucks into Maritime’s operations by 2025, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainability.
Looking ahead, Maritime anticipates an increase in volume during 2024, positioning itself to capitalize on emerging market opportunities. Founded in 2001 by John Williams, Maritime remains a family-run enterprise providing a range of logistics services, including integrated road and rail freight logistics, container transport and storage, domestic distribution, warehousing, freight management, and truck sales. With a workforce of around 3,000 employees and a fleet comprising 1,600 trucks alongside 36 daily rail services, Maritime is well-equipped to navigate the industry’s evolving landscape and meet future demands.
