Dr. Mike Morales is currently the president of the Mitsui OSK Lines-Magsaysay Maritime Academy. He was commissioned as a naval officer in 1983. After serving with the Philippine Coast, he volunteered as an instructor at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) in 1986 and later joined the Corps of Professors. As a computer scientist, he developed a network-based marine radar simulator that was used to train naval and maritime cadets. Dr. Morales spearheaded educational reforms at PMA, including the introduction of academic majors, the back subject system, and the creation of centers of excellence to improve the teaching and learning experience at the academy.
As a senior research fellow of the Asian Public Intellectuals program of the Japan Foundation, he studied leadership training at military academies of Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. He later continued his research as a Fulbright visiting scholar at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
After retiring from the military in 2008, he joined a global Christian organization where he served with a team covering Southeast Asia. He later joined the faculty of the International Graduate School of Leadership in Quezon City.
Dr. Morales has a bachelor’s degree in mathematical sciences from the United States Coast Guard Academy, a master’s in computer science from the Ateneo de Manila University, and a PhD in software engineering from Cranfield University in the U.K. He was awarded one of the country’s outstanding teacher awards by the Metrobank Foundation and is a recipient of The Outstanding Philippine Soldiers (TOPS) award.
Dr. Morales and his wife Lillian are from Davao city, and they have three grown children and two grandchildren.
