During his recent visit to Japan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the practical agenda of the Quad alliance, focusing on maritime security and disaster relief. He articulated how the Quad, which includes India, Japan, the United States, and Australia, has evolved over the past two decades into a “force for global good.” In an interview with Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun during the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit, Modi outlined the group’s effectiveness in providing humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and broader technological and health cooperation.
Modi highlighted the Quad’s diverse agenda, which incorporates various aspects such as maritime safety, cybersecurity, critical and emerging technologies, education, and space cooperation. He noted that the member nations are well-positioned to offer tangible benefits in the Indo-Pacific region, especially during times of crisis, enhancing the role of the Quad in delivering public goods. Japan’s contributions were recognized as pivotal in reinforcing the Quad’s objectives.
In addition to discussing the Quad, Modi illustrated the significance of the India-Japan partnership as a cornerstone of regional stability. He cited advancements in sectors such as semiconductors, defense, and space exploration, including the LUPEX lunar mission, as testimony to the deep-rooted strategic relationship between the two nations. Modi described India and Japan as ancient civilizations and vibrant democracies that are poised to lead in terms of innovation, security, and prosperity.
The Prime Minister also noted the alignment between India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative and Japan’s vision for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, showcasing their collective commitment to maritime stability and regional peace. Both nations have expressed unwavering support for territorial integrity and sovereignty in the region.
Looking ahead to the upcoming Quad summit, Modi anticipated further advancements in refining the group’s agenda. He asserted that through collaboration, the Quad can continue to deliver practical solutions and beneficial outcomes, not just for the Indo-Pacific but for the global community at large. This hopeful outlook encapsulates a shared vision for enhanced cooperation among the Quad nations, aiming to address contemporary challenges and reinforce collective security and prosperity.
