MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy Achieves MLIT Accreditation

On December 25, 2024, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), led by President & CEO Takeshi Hashimoto, announced that the MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy (MMMA), co-operated with Magsaysay Maritime Corporation, received certification from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). This certification confirms that MMMA meets the requirements to be recognized as an “Authorized Seafarer Education Institution” under the JISS system.

Previously, Filipino graduates of overseas maritime educational institutions had to pass an MLIT examination to serve on Japanese-flagged vessels. However, with this new certification, graduates from MMMA’s Bachelor of Science programs in Maritime Transport (BSMT) and Maritime Engineering (BSME) will be exempt from this examination, allowing them to board these vessels as officers or engineers, provided they hold the relevant maritime licenses issued in the Philippines. This exemption is a significant advantage for Filipino seafarers, emphasizing the recognition of MMMA’s quality education.

MLIT’s standards for certification are stringent, underlining the high quality and credibility of MMMA’s educational offerings. The academy’s educational programs, training facilities, and academic performance have garnered trust from the MLIT, further establishing its reputation in maritime education.

The MOL Group remains committed to training Filipino seafarers through MMMA, aiming to enhance their skills and contribute to the safe operation of its fleet. This initiative aligns with MOL’s broader sustainability goals, particularly its focus on “Human & Community” development and its commitment to supporting local communities. MOL aims to create job opportunities and advance the growth of individuals and communities through its educational efforts.

Located in Dasmariñas City, Cavite, Philippines, MMMA is a four-year boarding maritime university that can accommodate up to 300 students per year, with 150 each in navigation and engineering programs. Established in August 2018 and led by President Dr. Michael C. Morales, MMMA is becoming a vital institution for maritime education.

Notably, MMMA achieved recognition in May 2024 by participating in the Maritime Schools Assessment Program (MSAP), where both the BSMT and BSME programs secured second place nationwide. This achievement highlights the academy’s ongoing commitment to excellence in maritime education.

In summary, the certification of MMMA by the MLIT not only improves opportunities for Filipino seafarers but also strengthens MOL’s dedication to quality training and community development. The MOL Group aims to contribute to safety in maritime transport and overall societal growth through these initiatives.
