On June 29, 2024, the Global New Light of Myanmar reported an event attended by a Myanmar delegation during the Maritime Labour Rights Forum, titled “Charting a Course for Seafarers and Industry Empowerment.” This forum took place on May 27 and 28 at the Ascott Gurney Hotel in Penang, Malaysia. The delegation included Myanmar’s Ambassador to Malaysia, U Aung Soe Win, and U Chan Myae, the Director of the Seafarers Division in the Department of Marine Administration under the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
During the forum, Ambassador U Aung Soe Win had a significant interaction with Captain Abdul Samad bin Shaik Osman, the Deputy Director-General of Malaysia’s Maritime Department. As a gesture of goodwill and cooperation, Ambassador Win presented Captain Osman with a souvenir, symbolizing the strengthening of ties between Myanmar and Malaysia in the maritime industry.
The event aimed to address critical issues concerning the rights of seafarers and to empower those within the maritime sector, reflecting a growing recognition of the importance of fair labor practices in shipping and marine operations. This initiative indicates Myanmar’s commitment to international cooperation and the promotion of labor rights within the maritime industry.
