On April 5, 2026, the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) celebrated the 63rd National Maritime Day, concluding a week-long series of events known as Merchant Navy Week, which ran from March 28 to April 5, 2026. This occasion aimed to celebrate India’s maritime heritage and honor the contributions of seafarers and maritime stakeholders.
The observance began with a poignant Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Seafarers’ Memorial in Mangalore. Smt. S. Shanthi, Deputy Chairperson of NMPA, led the tribute, paying homage to seafarers who lost their lives while performing their duties. Senior officers, employees, and stakeholders were present to respect these brave individuals.
The festivities continued with a Grand Valedictory Function held at JNC Hall, where Smt. Shanthi presided over the event. Dr. M. Mohan Alva, the Chief Guest and Chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation, inaugurated the function. Other notable guests included Dr. R. K. Nair, recognized as the Green Hero of India, and Capt. Manoj Joshi, President of the Maritime Day Celebration Committee. During the proceedings, Dr. Alva emphasized the critical role of seafarers and maritime stakeholders in driving India’s economy and highlighted the need for their contributions to be recognized, especially given their significance in global trade.
Smt. Shanthi, in her address, commended the collaborative efforts of port users, stakeholders, and employees throughout the Merchant Navy Week, stressing that cooperation among maritime entities is essential for advancing India’s maritime sector. Dr. Nair also spoke on the importance of promoting environmental sustainability and responsible operations within the industry for sustainable growth.
The program included the presentation of the Merchant Navy Week report, recognition of significant contributors to the maritime sector, and awards for winners of competitions held during the week. A lively cultural segment featuring performances by Alva’s College students added an energetic touch to the evening, followed by dinner for participants.
The series of events during Merchant Navy Week included a Friendly Maritime Cricket Match, a Treasure Hunt, a Beach Cleaning Drive, and Tug of War Competition, all aimed at engaging the community and highlighting maritime significance. Other activities included a Blood Donation Camp, a Maritime Seminar discussing maritime challenges and the Indian Port Act 2025, as well as competitions for students and a Throwball competition for women employees.
A Maritime Marathon further showcased enthusiasm within the community. The week culminated with the formal acknowledgment of Captain Brijesh Chowta, a Member of Parliament, who was ceremoniously pinned with the Merchant Navy flag, symbolizing the week’s overarching theme of respect for those who contribute to maritime efforts.
