NYK was given a silver rating in the 2024 PRIDE Index for the second year in a row, a recognition based on an evaluation of LGBTQ+ initiatives in the workplace.
The PRIDE Index was initiated in 2016 by work with Pride, a voluntary organization that supports the promotion and establishment of diversity management related to LGBTQ+ in companies and other organizations, with the aim of creating a workplace where sexual minorities can work comfortably in Japan.
Companies are scored on five indicators — Policy, Representation, Inspiration, Development, and Engagement/Empowerment — and placed on a three-tiered scale of Gold, Silver, and “Bronze.”
NYK’s initiatives include the following:
- Supporting the Rainbow Communication Badge 2023 project sponsored by JobRainbow Inc., an LGBT support activity, and conducting awareness-raising activities.
- Thoroughly promoting LGBT awareness through e-learning for all employees, training for new employees and newly appointed managers, etc.
- Having an executive officer join the Pride1000 network, which aims to expand the circle of corporate managers who are allies (LGBTQ+ supporters and advocates) and promote the sending of positive messages.
- Participating in the Tokyo Rainbow Pride 2024 parade.
- Distributing a human rights column on the company intranet.
- Sharing initiatives on LGBT and other human rights issues with other companies and inviting experts to hold study sessions, etc. through the Mitsubishi Human Rights Enlightenment Committee.
