On Tuesday, the Philippines condemned China’s “reckless behaviour” following an incident in the South China Sea where two Chinese vessels collided while pursuing a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ship. This event highlights ongoing tensions in the contested waters, prompting a call from the Philippines for China to adhere to international maritime regulations.
The confrontation occurred when a Chinese Navy guided missile destroyer collided with a Chinese coastguard vessel during a high-speed chase targeting the PCG’s BRP Suluan. Commodore Jay Tarriela, the PCG’s spokesman for the West Philippine Sea, emphasized the importance of respecting the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (Colregs), which both China and the Philippines have endorsed. He warned that such reckless actions at sea could lead to severe accidents.
Defense analyst Richard Thomas expressed concern that had the destroyer struck the smaller coastguard vessels at a different angle, the incident could have resulted in catastrophic outcomes, including sinking and substantial loss of life. This assessment underscores the potential dangers inherent in confrontations in these contested maritime areas.
The incident adds to the rising tensions in the South China Sea, where various nations, including the Philippines, have raised concerns over China’s assertive maritime activities. The Philippines has consistently urged that compliance with international laws is crucial for maintaining safety and preventing further escalations in the region. The situation reflects the ongoing struggles over maritime claims and highlights the importance of diplomatic engagement in alleviating tensions and ensuring compliance with international norms.
