Philippines expands Balingoan Port to boost tourism, trade in Northern Mindanao

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr inaugurated a major infrastructure milestone on April 22 that is poised to reshape travel and commerce in Northern Mindanao.

The newly expanded Balingoan Port in Misamis Oriental, which connects mainland Mindanao to the idyllic Camiguin Island, now features a modern two-storey terminal with upgraded passenger amenities and significantly increased capacity.

Marcos led the inauguration of the P430.3-million (US$7.61 million) expansion project, which includes a new port operations building that can accommodate up to 500 passengers, more than triple the capacity of the old terminal. This enhancement is seen as a vital step in supporting the region’s growing tourism and shipping demands.

“This is just one of our projects and initiatives to modernize the ports across our archipelago,” Marcos said in Filipino. “With the improvement of this facility, we can expect tourism to grow stronger, businesses to pour in, the economy to flourish, and most importantly, the livelihood of the people of Misamis Oriental to improve.”

Upgraded port, expanded access

The terminal spans 3,082.50 square meters and features state-of-the-art amenities designed for traveler comfort and convenience. These include spacious lounge areas, gender-inclusive restrooms, childcare and play zones, prayer rooms, and food concession spaces, reflecting a clear commitment to inclusivity and modern travel standards.

The expanded port can now accommodate five to six roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels simultaneously, significantly easing congestion and reducing wait times for both passengers and cargo vehicles. Additional upgrades include an improved back-up area, a new RoRo ramp, and increased cargo storage, with an open yard capable of holding up to 300 car units.

Strategically located just 84 kilometers from Cagayan de Oro City, Balingoan Port serves as the primary maritime link to Camiguin, a lush volcanic island renowned for its crystalline beaches and natural springs. The upgraded port is expected to strengthen this connection and stimulate both domestic tourism and local trade.

In 2024 alone, Balingoan Port recorded over 6,102 ship calls, with RoRo traffic exceeding 109,000 and passenger volume reaching more than 671,000, surpassing pre-pandemic figures. These numbers are expected to rise further with the new facilities now operational.

Marcos emphasized that the Balingoan project is part of a broader infrastructure initiative under the administration’s “Build Better More” program. He also highlighted other developments, including the expanded Batangas Passenger Terminal, the Currimao Port in Ilocos Norte, the Ormoc Port in Leyte, and the Plaridel Port in Misamis Occidental.

“Our priority is not only to increase the capacity of the ports. It is also important to maintain their order to ensure the safe, secure, and comfortable travel of every passenger,” Marcos said.

The president emphasized that ports serve not only as gateways for trade, business, and tourism, but also as vital links to national development.

Meanwhile, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA)’s general manager Jay Daniel Santiago echoed the president’s remarks, calling the upgraded facility a symbol of transformation.

“With the modernized Balingoan Port now fully operational, it continues to serve as a gateway not only to the picturesque Camiguin Island but also as a symbol of progress and transformation in the Philippine transport sector,” Santiago said. “Every upgrade to this port is an investment in the livelihood and mobility of thousands of Filipinos who rely on it each day.”

The expanded Balingoan Port in Misamis Oriental is expected to increase capacity, enabling it to handle growing traffic and a higher volume of goods.

Tourism boost through improved access

Beyond improving transportation logistics, the port expansion is also expected to unlock the tourism potential of several hidden gems in Misamis Oriental.

In a media statement, the PPA highlighted the eco-tourism haven of Salag Dahilig in Barangay Dahilig, a serene mountain retreat near the Langit-langit Falls, accessible via the Claveria-Balingoan Road. Known as the “Dahilig Nest”, the site offers panoramic views of the Balatucan Mountain Range and is quickly becoming a favorite among nature-seekers.

Also drawing attention is Alibuag Spring Resort in Mantangale, a 5.5-hectare property surrounded by freshwater springs and lush orchards. With its charming cottages, executive suites, and aquatic attractions like snorkeling and scuba diving, the resort serves as a perfect jump-off point for marine tours to nearby Camiguin.

In the town of Sugbongcogon, Halseyle Hill’s Puesto Verde offers a luxurious escape with a saltwater infinity pool and breathtaking views of the Camiguin coastline, further cementing the province’s appeal to high-end travelers.

“These destinations, combined with enhanced port accessibility, reinforce Misamis Oriental’s growing stature as a premier tourism corridor in the region,” the PPA stated.
