A Filipino domestic helper, Rhodora Alcaraz, 28, has gained admiration after rescuing her employer’s three-month-old baby and elderly mother from a devastating fire in Hong Kong. Just one day into her new job, Alcaraz was trapped in her employer’s smoke-filled apartment during a blaze that killed at least 151 people and left more than 40 missing. She emerged as a hero for her bravery and compassion, highlighting the vital role of the city’s many domestic workers.
Alcaraz’s ordeal, which captured the attention of her family, friends, and the public, exemplifies the sacrifices made by overseas workers, who often leave their homes in search of better opportunities to support their families. In a heartfelt tribute, Senator Imee Marcos of the Philippines praised Alcaraz on social media, and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration dubbed her a “modern-day hero.” Both Alcaraz’s employer, Kanon Chung, and her former employer expressed their gratitude and relief for her actions during the harrowing incident.
Amid the fire, Alcaraz sent panicked audio messages to her sister, detailing the dire situation as she gasped for breath. Her family’s desperate efforts to locate her were echoed in the words of Rhoda Lynn Dayo, her former employer in the Philippines, who prayed for her safety, fearing the worst. Alcaraz had cared for Dayo’s children for over four years, earning a reputation for her deep affection and dedication, which made the family trust her implicitly.
The fire at Wang Fuk Court, Hong Kong’s deadliest in over 75 years, serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by domestic helpers in a city known for its high cost of living. With approximately 368,000 foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong, primarily from the Philippines and Indonesia, Alcaraz’s story sheds light on the challenges they face, such as cramped living conditions and modest wages.
Alcaraz’s decision to work abroad was driven by the need to provide for her family, particularly given their modest financial circumstances. Her younger sister, Raychell Loreto, expressed pride in Rhodora’s bravery and sacrifices, emphasizing the family’s reliance on her support. The incident underscores not only Alcaraz’s heroism but also the essential contributions of domestic workers in Hong Kong, who often navigate difficult and dangerous situations in their commitment to their employers and families back home.
