In the first half of 2024, piracy incidents in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore decreased significantly, halving compared to the previous year, according to the ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre. The Straits experienced 22 reported incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships between January and June 2024, a notable drop from the same period in 2023. Most attacks targeted bulk carriers, which remain particularly vulnerable in this region.
The ReCAAP, an initiative aimed at enhancing cooperation against piracy and armed robbery in Asia, highlighted that while the Straits continue to face challenges with piracy, recent years have shown positive trends due to heightened surveillance, more operational arrests, and stricter enforcement of security measures by coastal states. Maritime piracy in Southeast Asia typically involves unarmed or lightly armed boarding for theft, contrasting with more violent pirate activities in other global regions that often involve hostage-taking and severe aggression.
Overall, Asia saw a reduction in piracy during the first half of 2024, with 51 incidents reported compared to 61 in the same timeframe the previous year. This improvement is attributed to collaborative efforts among maritime stakeholders, increased vigilance from shipping companies, and enhanced reporting practices by shipmasters.
Krishnaswamy Natarajan, executive director of the ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre, emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum in combating piracy and urged all involved parties to remain vigilant. Despite the general trend of fewer piracy incidents, there has been an uptick in petty theft reported at certain ports and anchorages during this period. Natarajan advised shipping companies to maintain a rigorous lookout and report any incidents promptly to the authorities.
