Head of Marine, QBE Asia

Rama Chandran was appointed in August 2015 as head of marine, QBE Asia. He has over 40 years of both industry and extensive marine underwriting experience. Prior to QBE, Rama worked as a class underwriter, marine and energy for Argo Global Underwriting Asia Pacific. Before that, he was the head of marine, SVP for Asia Capital Reinsurance Group Singapore, managing a team of underwriters for both facultative and treaty business covering Asia, Gulf Cooperation Council, Central Asia, Turkey and Australia/New Zealand.

Rama is a marine engineer by trade and has worked for Neptune Orient Lines Singapore prior to joining the insurance industry. He came ashore to join Ritchie & Bisset (Far East) as a surveyor and, in 13 years with that firm, rose to managing director.

Rama holds an MBA from the University of Leicester and is a member of the Society of Naval Architect & Marine Engineering, and Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union. He is a qualified marine engineer officer (Class 1 Motorship) under the Merchant Shipping Act.

Rama was the chairman of the Ocean Hull Committee of the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) from 2018 to 2022. He is currently a member of the committee. Rama is also a member of the Marine Committee at the General Insurance Association of Singapore. Other positions include member at the Legal and Insurance Committee at Singapore Shipping Association and local chapter at Singapore Arbitration Center.

Rama was named as the sixth most influential people in marine insurance globally for 2020 by Lloyd’s List.
