Safety of seafarers in West Asia at 'top of mind': Singapore DPM

Safety of Seafarers in West Asia Discussed by Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister

During Singapore Maritime Week, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong reaffirmed the country’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of seafarers affected by ongoing conflicts in West Asia, particularly near the Strait of Hormuz. Highlighting the heightened concern among industry stakeholders regarding seafarers stranded in the region, Gan assured that the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is actively coordinating with ship owners and operators to ensure the safety of maritime crews.

Gan addressed the crucial issue of safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that the right to transit should remain non-negotiable. He stated that such rights are safeguarded under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), indicating that negotiations would inadvertently imply acceptance of restrictions on an inherent principle. This stance reflects Singapore’s broader commitment to uphold international maritime laws and principles, even amidst regional tensions.

In addition to these safety concerns, Gan expressed an awareness of manpower shortages within the maritime sector. To tackle these challenges, Singapore is exploring the utilization of autonomous vessels, including harbor craft. Ongoing research and development efforts aim to integrate these technological solutions into the maritime industry, with pilot initiatives anticipated in the near future.

Throughout his remarks, Gan emphasized the importance of balancing the urgent need for safe maritime transport with the preservation of international maritime principles. He reassured attendees that Singapore remains dedicated to supporting the maritime community and protecting both seafarers and global shipping routes during these tumultuous times. This commitment underscores Singapore’s strategic role in maintaining maritime safety and ensuring the continuity of vital shipping operations despite geopolitical challenges.
