The World Maritime University (WMU), the International Federation of Shipmasters’ Associations (IFSMA), the Nautical Institute (NI), the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), and the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) are collaborating to collect seafarers’ views on hours of work/rest, workload, and ship manning through a survey. The survey is conducted as part of a research project funded by the charitable organization ITF Seafarers’ Trust.
The research team comprises professors, seafarers, shipmasters and a psychologist. At the conclusion of the survey, WMU will work with the maritime community to consider improvements.
The aim of the survey is to capture seafarers’ experiences related to hours of work/rest, workload and ship manning and inform the consideration of improvements by the shipping industry. Seafarers who are currently working on any commercial ship or who have worked on such ships at any time after 1st February 1997 can participate in the survey.
The surveyed seafarers’ identity will be kept strictly confidential and the responses will remain anonymous. Seafarers’ details will not be identified in any publication or report resulting from this survey. The survey has been reviewed according to the WMU Research Ethics Committee procedures.
The participation deadline is 31 December 2022.
