On January 26, 2026, the Sharjah Maritime Academy (SMA) and Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) formalized their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the SMA campus in Khorfakkan, Sharjah. The agreement aims to enhance international collaboration in maritime education, training, research, and institutional development.

The MoU was signed by Rear Admiral Francis McDonald, President of MMA, and Dr. Hashim AlZaabi, Chancellor of SMA. It underscores both institutions’ commitment to working together to develop strategies and action plans that ensure high-quality maritime education and effectively prepare cadets for the global maritime workforce.

Under this framework for cooperation, SMA and MMA will collaborate on academic programs and professional maritime training, as well as joint research initiatives and continuing education. Each area of collaboration will align with the respective academic regulations and national requirements of both institutions. The agreement also emphasizes the importance of sustaining maritime education initiatives and institutional development.

During the signing ceremony, a delegation from MMA toured SMA’s campus, exploring its various academic and training facilities, including simulators and laboratories. This visit offered an insight into SMA’s educational environment, applied learning approach, and advanced maritime training infrastructure.

The MoU outlines key areas for mutual development in studies such as Marine Transportation, Marine Engineering, Maritime Business, Maritime Logistics, and Supply Chain Management. Additionally, it facilitates cooperation in research and development activities, allowing for the exchange of faculty members, staff, and qualified undergraduate students between the two academies.

Dr. Hashim Al Zaabi highlighted that the MoU symbolizes SMA’s dedication to fostering international collaboration with leading maritime educational institutions.
