Singapore, Lao deepen clean energy cooperation

Second Minister for Trade and Industry Dr Tan See Leng and Lao PDR Minister of Energy and Mines Dr Daovong Phonekeo reaffirmed their commitment to support each other’s clean energy transition and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Energy Cooperation in Singapore September 28. The MOU was signed on the sidelines of Lao PDR Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh’s and Dr Daovong’s official visit to Singapore.

The MoU covers key areas of bilateral energy cooperation, including renewable energy deployment in Lao PDR, the development of regional power grids and grid interconnections for cross-border electricity trade, and the development of systems and procedures to measure, report and verify renewable energy.

Second Minister Dr Tan said, “The MoU builds on the successful commencement of the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP) earlier this year. It will enhance cross-border electricity trading in the region, and enable countries in the region to decarbonize and meet domestic energy needs, while creating jobs and economic growth for the source countries. It is also a step towards realizing the broader ASEAN Power Grid vision.”
