Singapore Observes Day of the Seafarer Completing 13,000 Crew Changes

Singapore Marks Day of the Seafarer with 13,000 Crew Changes

To mark the Day of the Seafarer, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) implemented various initiatives aimed at supporting seafarers and ensuring safe crew changes while addressing public health concerns. Since the end of March, the MPA has facilitated over 13,000 crew sign-ons and sign-offs across approximately 650 companies and 1,150 ships, with a significant portion of changes occurring on tankers, containers, and bulk carriers. While the majority of crew seamlessly passed through the port, around 100 seafarers required medical assistance.

In a bid to streamline health assessments, Singapore introduced telemedicine consultations to evaluate crew members remotely. This innovative approach allows for real-time medical evaluations via video, eliminating the need for medical personnel to board vessels physically.

Further supporting their initiatives, the MPA collaborated with local businesses to produce 3D-printed face masks for seafarers signing off, enhancing their safety during travel. Senior Minister of State for Transport and Health, Dr. Lam Pin Min, emphasized the essential role that seafarers play during the pandemic, thanking them for their continuous contributions to global trade.

Additionally, the MPA, in partnership with various maritime organizations, distributed 1,000 care packages to an estimated 10,000 seafarers in the port. This included delivering care packs to the PIL vessel Kota Nasrat via drone, showcasing the use of technology to improve delivery efficiency.

Moreover, the MPA made a financial contribution of S$200,000 to seafarer missions, which will benefit organizations such as the Norwegian Seamen’s Mission and the Danish Seamen’s Church. This grant aims to support vital services like counseling, pastoral care, and transportation for seafarers.

Overall, the MPA’s efforts reflect its commitment to ensuring the well-being of seafarers and their significant role in maintaining maritime operations amid challenging circumstances.
