Singapore is paving the way in maritime health by prioritizing Covid-19 vaccinations for frontline maritime personnel, which includes seafarers, port workers, and related professionals. This initiative comes as part of the country’s Sea-Air Vaccination Exercise, aiming to vaccinate over 10,000 maritime workers by the end of January 2021. Those who receive a full course of vaccination will benefit from reduced testing requirements, facilitating smoother operations in the maritime sector.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is leading this effort, emphasizing the importance of these workers in maintaining the transportation of essential goods, including food and medical supplies. With vaccination, the government seeks to enhance the sense of security for seafarers, allowing them to focus on their crucial roles without the weight of health concerns.
To register for priority vaccinations, Singaporean nationals and long-term residents can contact the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU), which acts as the designated contact point appointed by the MPA. SMOU General Secretary Mary Liew highlighted the organization’s commitment to supporting maritime workers by ensuring their access to vaccines, thereby safeguarding not only the workers but also their families and communities. Her leadership, alongside other tripartite partners, is vital in advocating for vaccination prioritization on a global scale.
The first completed vaccination was administered to Mr. Loh Kah Wai, a 55-year-old marine harbour pilot, who expressed relief that the vaccine provides additional safety for himself and his colleagues. This reflects a broader sentiment among seafarers, as the vaccination effort also serves to protect their families from potential Covid-19 transmission.
The initiative has sparked similar calls internationally, notably from Nautilus International and other maritime unions in the UK, urging the government to recognize seafarers as a priority vaccination group. In a significant move, the UN General Assembly echoed these sentiments, urging governments worldwide to designate seafarers as key workers.
