Global demand for Filipino seafarers up on shipping, offshore demand growth — ATPI

Surge in Global Demand for Filipino Seafarers Amid Growth

The global demand for Filipino seafarers is experiencing significant growth, with industry forecasts predicting an annual increase of 5 to 7 percent over the next 12 to 18 months. This surge is attributed to the expanding shipping, cruise, and offshore sectors worldwide, as highlighted by ATPI Travel Philippines, a key player in marine travel and logistics.

Yvette Araullo, the managing director of ATPI Philippines, noted that the need for skilled Filipino crew members has particularly escalated in offshore energy, short-sea container trades, and passenger vessels. This trend is supported by the recovery of international fleets and the emergence of new regional hubs, which increase the demand for qualified personnel.

According to the BIMCO/International Chamber of Shipping Seafarer Workforce Report 2024, approximately 1.89 million seafarers work on internationally trading merchant ships, including 857,540 officers and 1,035,180 ratings. This statistic emphasizes the competition within the global labor market for maritime positions and the critical role of Filipino seafarers.

The changing dynamics of fleet deployment are reshaping the movement of Filipino crews, highlighting an urgent need for digitalization and operational flexibility in logistics. To meet the increasing demand for seafarers, ATPI has made advancements in data visibility and travel-management capabilities. The company is enhancing its partnerships with airlines and marine agencies to ensure effective coordination among shipowners, manning agencies, and travel partners.

ATPI’s proprietary marine technology platforms, CrewHub and CrewLink, facilitate end-to-end crew travel management, simplifying processes from booking to real-time tracking. This innovation reduces the amount of manual intervention required and enhances transparency for clients. Additionally, the Travel Tracking System (TTS) provides crucial support for duty-of-care obligations by offering live location monitoring, risk alerts, and instant communication capabilities for crew members during their travels.

Recently, ATPI expanded its presence in the Philippines by establishing the World Support Center (WSC) in Manila. This 24/7 operational facility will provide a full suite of marine and travel management services, serving as a hub for talent and a strategic base for the company’s global operations.

As a longstanding partner of the maritime industry, ATPI aims to fortify the Philippines’ position as a vital global seafaring hub, leveraging technology-driven solutions, enhanced communications, and an expanded international reach. Through these initiatives, the company is well-positioned to support the rising demand for Filipino seafarers and contribute to the overall growth of the maritime sector.
