Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, recently discussed the potential impacts of the United States’ tariffs on China and their implications for global trade, particularly concerning the Suez Canal. During a press conference, Rabie emphasized that a substantial volume of trade traffic through the canal comprises Chinese goods. As the U.S. imposes tariffs on these items, this could adversely affect crossing rates, although he noted that the effects have yet to materialize significantly due to China’s retaliatory tariffs on American products.
Rabie highlighted the importance of monitoring these evolving trade dynamics, as he expects a slowdown in tariff-related decisions in the upcoming months. He further pointed out that the Suez Canal is not only influenced by economic factors but also by geopolitical situations globally and regionally. He referenced turmoil in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab, which led to over $7 billion in losses for the canal last year, despite its distance from these conflict zones.
Despite being a crucial maritime trade route, Rabie acknowledged that the canal is still susceptible to disruptions from regional conflicts. He cited the latest threats to maritime traffic in the Red Sea, including incidents reported as recently as December. However, he remains hopeful for a gradual improvement in traffic through the Suez Canal by mid-2025, contingent on the cessation of Houthi attacks and stability in the area. Rabie noted that traffic through the canal saw a recovery in March, with an increase in daily ship crossings from 30 to 42, which translated to a revenue boost of approximately $335 million—a notable 8.8% rise compared to January.
This upturn in traffic coincided with a temporary ceasefire in the Gaza Strip between Hamas and Israel, reached on January 19. However, the situation deteriorated with renewed hostilities by March 18. Rabie’s outlook emphasizes the intricate relationship between trade policies, geopolitical stability, and the operational flow of one of the world’s vital trade routes, underscoring the challenges faced by the Suez Canal Authority in maintaining steady maritime traffic amid fluctuating global circumstances.
