TotalEnergies Marine Fuels Engages Singapore’s Tertiary Students at MaritimeONE Case Summit 2024

TotalEnergies Connects with Singapore’s Students at MaritimeONE 2024

The MaritimeONE Case Summit 2024, organized by the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF), presents a unique opportunity for tertiary students in Singapore to engage with pressing issues in the maritime industry. This annual case competition aims to facilitate the development of innovative solutions that address the challenges of sustainability and well-being in shipping. Participants are encouraged to form teams of 2-4 and register by September 1.

TotalEnergies Marine Fuels, along with partner companies CMA CGM, Pacific Carriers Limited, and Petredec Group, has outlined specific challenges for this year’s competition. Each of these challenges targets significant industry concerns. TotalEnergies Marine Fuels’ challenge centers on creating a framework for delivering bio-methane in Singapore, aimed at reducing emissions associated with shipping fuel supplies, thus enabling shipping companies to reflect carbon savings while continuing to use fossil LNG.

The SMF’s press release highlights that this is the fifth edition of the summit, which not only connects students with industry professionals but also provides mentorship, strengthens students’ credentials, and offers cash prizes up to $4,000. The competition culminates in a grand final on November 7, 2024, where shortlisted teams will present their innovative solutions.

The specific challenges presented by each sponsoring company include:

  1. CMA CGM Group aims to improve tracking and reporting on Scope 3 emissions through better data management and collaborative frameworks in the supply chain.

  2. Pacific Carriers Limited focuses on enhancing the well-being of navigation officers by leveraging technology for user-friendly solutions that promote better operational practices and fatigue management.

  3. Petredec Global seeks to quantify carbon emission reductions achieved by using LPG instead of biomass for cooking in developing regions, evaluating LPG’s role as a transition fuel.

The importance of this summit is underlined by influential figures from the sponsoring companies. Mr. Hor Weng Yew, Chairman of SMF, expressed gratitude to the sponsors for their commitment to fostering talent and addressing complex industry issues. Mr. Bo Wegener of CMA CGM emphasized the company’s goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050, focusing on innovative solutions to tackle Scope 3 emissions. Capt. Chubasco Monteiro from Pacific Carriers Limited highlighted the initiative’s potential to inspire young talent to tackle real-world challenges.

Moreover, Mr. Jonathan Fancher of Petredec Global and Ms. Louise Tricoire of TotalEnergies shared their anticipation of engaging with young minds to innovate solutions for decarbonization in the maritime sector. They stressed the necessity of addressing environmental concerns while supporting the industry’s transition towards more sustainable practices.

Overall, the MaritimeONE Case Summit 2024 not only aims to inspire students but also contributes to the broader goal of decarbonizing the maritime sector and enhancing the welfare of those who work within it. Through collaborative efforts and innovative thinking, the summit strives to equip future leaders with the tools necessary to navigate the complexities of the maritime industry.
