Tragic CO2 Leak on Dry Bulk Carrier Claims 8 to 10 Lives

A tragic maritime accident occurred during a ship repair job in Rongcheng City, Shandong Province, China, resulting in either eight or ten fatalities, with an additional 19 individuals hospitalized, some in serious but stable condition. The incident took place on May 25, 2023, at around 3 PM local time, involving the Fujian Shipping Company vessel, Jinhaixiang, which was undergoing routine repairs at Xixiakou Ship Repair near Longyan Port.

The cause of the accident is believed to be the unexpected activation of the vessel’s carbon dioxide injection system, designed for fire protection. This system, when triggered, can release carbon dioxide, an odorless and invisible gas that can displace oxygen and lead to asphyxiation in enclosed spaces. Such scenarios pose significant risks to workers, especially during repair jobs. Initial reports indicate that the third officer of the Jinhaixiang has been detained as part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the activation of the system.

Longyan Port, built in 1990 and operational since 1994, is located approximately 378 miles southeast of Beijing. The Jinhaixiang itself was constructed in 1994 and is equipped to carry a deadweight of 69,000 tons, making it a sizable cargo vessel. The ship, which is Chinese-flagged, has a gross tonnage of 35,884 and measures just under 225 meters in length and 32.2 meters in breadth. The current repairs, scheduled to last 22 days, are part of the vessel’s routine five-year maintenance cycle.

In the wake of the accident, executives from Fujian Shipping Company have arrived at the site to assist in the investigation efforts. Authorities are keen to understand the exact reasons behind the activation of the fire protection system and ensure accountability.

The incident underscores the inherent dangers associated with maritime and industrial work, particularly related to the handling of hazardous materials and systems in enclosed spaces. As investigations proceed, there are likely to be broader discussions regarding safety protocols and measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
