U.S. Navy Transport Ship Engulfed in Flames for 12 Hours Off Japan

On August 20, a fire erupted on the USS New Orleans, a US Navy amphibious transport dock ship anchored off Okinawa, Japan. The situation unfolded over 12 hours, with Japanese vessels successfully extinguishing the blaze by early August 21. Two American sailors sustained minor injuries in the incident, prompting medical treatment.

The US 7th Fleet issued a statement confirming that the cause of the fire is under investigation and that the New Orleans’ crew would remain on board during this time. The ship, measuring 208.4 meters and weighing 24,433 tons, is stationed at the White Beach Naval Facility.

Initially, the US military requested assistance from Japan’s Coast Guard, but this request was later canceled. However, it was renewed around 7:30 PM local time. In response, four Japanese vessels, comprising resources from Japan’s Coast Guard, Navy, and private contractors, participated in firefighting efforts throughout the night.

Japan hosts approximately 54,000 US military personnel, most of whom are stationed in Okinawa. The incident highlights the close military cooperation between the United States and Japan, especially in emergency responses.

This incident raises concerns about maritime safety and preparedness, especially considering the presence of significant military resources in the region. The ongoing investigation into the root cause of the fire will be crucial for preventing similar occurrences in the future.
